Pentalobes

Problem:

• 300 million people worldwide suffer from asthma
• Increase in asthma patients by 50% every ten years
• 1/12 people in the US (25 million)
• 7 million children in the US

The only solution currently available is spirometry, which is bulky, heavy and expensive. In addition, continuous monitoring is not possible.

Their solution is the development of a wireless wearable sensor that is able to continuously monitor breathing behavior and deliver the clinically relevant breathing information to a smartphone / web / cloud. Which medically measures the following symptoms: forced expiratory volume delivered in the first second (FEV1) of a forced vital capacity (FVC) maneuver, and the ratio of FEV1 to FVC.
